Ken's Story
Life
For most of the past twenty years I have lived in Huntington Beach, which is where I live now with my wife Kathy of seventeen years and my two daughters Kaila, fourteen, a freshman at Edison high and Chiara, eleven, a sixth-grader at Sowers Middle School.
College
After screwing around for a couple of years I quit baseball, left school and went to work only to return again in five years. The second time worked. I was married by then and more focused and at a place in life where I wanted to know. I double majored in Philosophy and History and minored in religion and drank a lot of iced cappuccinos. It was one of the best times of my life. I never wanted to leave! I didn't. I stayed and earned my masters degree in history. But alas, all good things must come to an end; I left school and took a job teachin...Expand for more
g and became an adult.
Workplace
My first experience teaching was at FVHS where I did my student teaching. Surprisingly, high school hasn't changed that much in twenty years and neither have kids. The past eight years I've been teaching at Sowers Middle School in south Huntington Beach where I teach English, History and coach basketball. It's a job that fits me pretty good. I'm about twelve years old at heart so I prefer the company of kids to adults. The job is really rewarding when you make a connection with the kids and their families. It feels like I'm doing something very meaningful, though, like any other job, there are days when I wish I hadn't gotten out of bed. On balance, though, it's a job that I really enjoy. It's not as good as playing center field for the Angels, but what are you gonna do?
